"You might be silly enough to think

That one day you’ll have it all figured out.

That your skin will feel like your own

And you’ll be able to breathe in peace for one precious second without thinking about how everyone around you is an audience to your life.

You might actually think

That one of these days

You’ll understand every single part of yourself.

That you’ll know with certainty where you stand in the world."

Gabrielle Lewis, Mixed Roots

MIXED ROOTS

Mixed Roots is a poetic exploration of self and identity. It centers around The Girl, a semi-autobiographical version of the playwright, and her family as she grows up and explores what it means to be biracial in a black and white world. Told through vignettes of childhood and beyond, Mixed Roots tries to answer the question: Who Am I?
